Adult or older child with reflux?
Bringing up food and stomach acids is a common physiological process that usually happens after eating in otherwise healthy people. It is most common in babies – affecting 4 in 10 infants – but can happen to almost everyone at some point in their lives.
Pregnant women can suffer with heartburn and reflux while their growing baby pushes stomach systems upwards and squashes the Mum’s stomach space. Elderly people suffer with reflux because the condition increases with age naturally and older children can struggle with reflux if the infant condition (GOR) develops into the disease. (GORD) or becomes a secondary symptom of another illness.
The NHS advises that infant reflux usually stops when the baby reaches 12-14 months of age. It’s unusual if reflux continues at 18 months old, however when it does continue into older childhood and adult life, longer term effects occur as: heartburn – burning chest pain or discomfort that occurs after eating, acid reflux – you may have an unpleasant taste in the mouth, caused by stomach acid coming back up into your mouth, pain when swallowing (odynophagia) and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
if the symptoms persist it’s usually regarded as a condition that needs treatment. Most people initially respond well to treatment with medication, but symptoms can often return quite quickly (within days or weeks). People with recurring GORD may need to take medication on a long-term basis.
One way to help with the painful symptoms is to prop yourself up at night. The use of Sleep bed wedges is a recognised and simple way to help cope with rising stomach acids and reflux symptoms. When reflux becomes a sleep thief, it’s time to act. Our bed wedge is designed to allow gravity to help the body stabilise so that sleep can follow. The wedge will sit nicely underneath a pillow (if desired for added comfort) and won’t interfere with bedding, equipment or other people sharing the space.
Excellent was thinking of getting an adjustable
bed but thought I would try this first glad I did, saved me a lot of money. (Yvonne talking about her new Adult Wedge)
Our child wedge is based on the baby cot wedge and the Adult wedge. It has a greater incline, a longer length to account for an order child and has a removable polycotton cover. We tested this wedge design with children who were coping with primary reflux and reflux as a secondary condition, aswell as children with musculature-skeletal conditions, where a slight elevation was found to be helpful.
96% of parents said their child’s sleep and reflux symptoms improved over the two week period of testing.
Since launching our wedge for reflux, we have been contact by people asking to use the wedge for other ailments, where being propped up in bed is essential. Conditions such as:
• Coughs, Colds, Flu symptoms
• Respiratory conditions such as Asthma, Sinusitis, Pneumonia
• Sleep Apnea
• Lung conditions such as Asbestosis
• Pulmonary disease
• Blood pressure
